THA Compliance Conference, Fall, 2007

I attended this workshop at the invitation of a state hospital executive for whom I created a training module in the HRD 698 Independent Study course.

The training module, viewable elsewhere on this Web site, provides federally mandated Medicare/Medicaid Fraud & Abuse training. The conference provided material that supports the training module. Here is a description from the brochure:

The detection and elimination of health care fraud and abuse is a top priority of federal and state law enforcement. According to Associate U.S. Attorney, Jim Sheehan, the False Claims Act
brought in the largest amount ever in 2006 ($2.2 billion) and over 500 new whistle-blower cases are filed a year.

Participants at this conference will join government representatives from the OIG, DOJ and TBI
as well as other legal experts and compliance professionals for analysis and discussion of
current and emerging fraud trends in Tennessee. Other topics of interest include the different
categories of health care fraud cases, case examples and the individual responsibilities of and
coordination between federal, state and commercial insurance companies regarding health care
fraud investigations.
